Red Imported Fire Ants, a widespread problem in the
southeastern United States, became a new worry for California and its
productive agricultural industry, an industry already under siege from
a growing list of exotic pests. Discoveries of fire ants in an Orange
County nursery late in 1998 quickly led to widespread finds in Orange
County and limited finds in Los Angeles County and in Riverside County's
Coachella Valley and the City of Moreno Valley.

Orange County governments

Local government officials and citizens in Orange County called for eradication of

throughout California and neighboring states. They discussed the problem
in a January 1999 Town Hall meeting in Santa Ana.
